Beginner here, so be nice. I've 5 tasks finished and sitting at uploading, but they've been like that at least for the last 7 h - is this normal?

The BOINC client does back off very rapidly after a couple of failed upload attempts, sometimes waiting hours before trying again. You can try to kick it back to life with the Advanced view menu option Tools ยป Retry pending transfers.
