21) Message boards : Cafe : Whitelist SiDock for Gridcoin - What say ye? (Message 679)

Ok I'm going to start another poll to WhiteList SiDock for Gridcoin but I'll need help.
The rules say the discussion must be divided between 4 forums, none of which are BOINC forums.
I have a github account and can create that Issue but I do not have a discord, reddit or steemit account and don't think I ever will. If some kind person will create those 3 discussion threads maybe it'll work this time.

Also, be sure you make the Emergency Mandatory 5.3.0 upgrade to your GRC wallet.

Yea I see that too. SiDock does not play well with other CPU projects due to the 24 hour deadline. But one can always find mismatched pairings where the shorter deadline elbows out others.
That's why I submitted a request on BOINC github for a new command called Project_Priority or some such thing as I can't find the actual text I posted. The idea was that I should be able to specify the order I want work done. E.g.:
In my SiDock app_config:
<Project_Priority>1</Project_Priority>
In my TN_Grid app_config:
<Project_Priority>2</Project_Priority>
In my WCG app_config:
<Project_Priority>3</Project_Priority>
In my Universe app_config:
<Project_Priority>4</Project_Priority>

Another approach was <Run_Until_Done>0|1</Run_Until_Done>
But it fell on deaf ears. I imagine it would take a lot of work to provide an alternative or a replacement for the current BOINC estimation routines that determine which of multiple projects to get work for next and to run now.
In general BOINC works best when one runs a single CPU project per computer.

Who is hammering this poor server

I have two suggestions as to who is hammering the server:
1. BOINCers that are running more than one project but have set Resource for SiDock much higher than their other projects so it polls the server far more often than necessary to get a mere 2 WUs per thread, and
2. Bunkerers that use multiple clients to pretend to have more computers than they actually have and the app_config command <ncpus>N</ncpus> to pretend to have more CPUs than they actually have to suck down more WUs than they can actually run.

Oh, there's key on the bottom of the second page that is not on the first page.

In that case I don't see why you think they might be having server problems. SiDock is doing much better than last month for the BAMstats race. I've yet to see them run out of work this week.

With a 24-hour deadline on SiDock WUs this is the best project to spot bunkering. I don't bunker and never have. I have a few computers down for maintenance but will be running a steady 1,677,769 credits per day here.
Bunkerers start out with a big flash in the pan then trail off as the race progresses. The next two days will tell the tale.

Looking at the longer term charts I don't understand why there are so many more Returns than InProgress???

The Formula BOINC race was announced on 03/18/2021 11:00 (UTC) and began 03/19/2021 11:00 (UTC).
Some contestants begin bunkering where they down load as many WUs as they can finagle and start running them but they don't return them until after the race starts on 3/19 at 11:00 UTC.
So if your graph is in UTC then it makes sense. Returns are way down before race day and In Progress is up.
Then when the starting gun goes off they dump all their completed WUs and rts spikes while inProgress drops down to normal again.

Start by asking the guy to reboot his computer.
Then scratch your head and ask why are you running a native application in a VirtualCatBox???

To run a GPU project and a CPU project concurrently, a single client can be used.
Just tell the client via app_config that the GPU application requires next to no CPU time.

(Seperate clients for concurrent projects are still better. This way you can set different workqueue parameters per project.)

I will never run multiple clients because it's a waste of time and effort. It's also the main tool of bunkering to cheat and get more WUs than one deserves.
Very few projects can run at optimum performance with less than a dedicated CPU to go with each GPU.

How about start sending them out instead of waiting for every last straggler from T4 to return???

"Eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic, no vaccines or antiviral drugs are available against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the pandemic, owing to a lack of knowledge about the detailed structures and functions of the essential virus proteins."
That's a half truth at best. The structure of the Spike was known and vaccines were in trials.
Wondering what happens to a cell if your new E-blocking drug stops them from escaping the Golgi. Will the cell hopelessly clog up and die??? Will the cell be able to route all these budding failures to the lysosomes???

It appears your WUs come with a 24 hour deadline and that's too short. It triggers a quirk in BOINC that changes the status of the WUs to High Priority and that turns off the GPUs since their CPUs get stolen to run High Priority CPU WUs. I'm going to file an Issue on github.
For now you could change it to 72 hours or maybe 48 hours is long enough to avoid this from happening.

It's odd that you only send 2 WUs per CPU thread and those can be completed in less than half a day. Ergo, 24 hours is more than enough. But it's not you it's BOINC.
For now I'm running in Resource Zero mode to see if that'll keep all my GPUs turned on.

have you changed the parameters of the wu? They are much longer than yesterday

I doubt they changed anything. It's just a matter of which ligand they're docking against RdRp. How long is the ligand, how flexible, how many polar functional groups are exposed, etc.
50 to 60 minutes per WU was pretty common but lately I'm seeing many that are closer to 2 hours.

Had some WUs that ran up to 5 hours last night. Without the ability to Suspend at Checkpoint the WUs have to be allowed to run out or abort them. This is a real nuisance if one needs to turn off a computer for any reason.

You really need to implement checkpointing.
