21) Message boards : Number crunching : Tasks hanging - (Message 1794)

Confirmed, this issue was caused by low memory - running 3 CPDN OpenIFS apps and 21 mixed SiDock, TN-Grid and WCG tasks in 16GB was always going to be tight but having upgraded to 64GB the hanging tasks have disappeared.

i have 2 of these hanging tasks ongoing - should i abort them?
both are using a full core of cpu time.
in both cases, the only files in the slot directory that is being updated is boinc_mmap_file and init_data.xml

I've suspended the 3 I have in progress until admin have a chance to review them.

Has anyone else had a problem with the 0.2.0 long tasks hanging?

I aborted https://www.sidock.si/sidock/result.php?resultid=76865427 when it was in high priority mode with 4 days remaining and a 3 day deadline as the progress was not moving and the outstanding time was still rising.

I now have 2 more in the same state, for example corona_Sprot_delta_v1_RM_sidock_00411620_r1_s1000.0_0 at 51.004% after nearly 15 hours.

Hello!
I think that is caused by imbalance in the estimation of the task completion time. We fixed it and watching.

An oddity for you, I had a job running quite happily, then I rebooted the machine (Linux Mint 20.3, Boinc 7.20.2) and the figures jumped to 9.25 hours elapsed and 102 days remaining.

Over the next 1.5 hours this changed to 10.75 hours elapsed and 2 days 7 hours remaining :-

I have not seen this behaviour before, could it be related?

Hi,

I joined this team sometime ago & have yet to receive anything to process? Is the project over?

I have Virtual Box on a MacBook Pro & was going to put this up on my Windows 10 desktop, but if data to process is no longer being sent out, maybe I should just delete the project?

Thanks,

Phillip Slaughter

Working well on my machines.
27) Message boards : Number crunching : Never ending WU's ? (Message 1634)

Post:
Hello! :)

Tasks for target corona_NSP16_v1 much longer than for previous target and varies from ~5 hours up to ~20(!) hours for my Ryzen 3900X.
Each task (excluding last workunit of whole set) is a job for inspecting of reactions of 500 ligands with target protein, but if one ligand "looks" good, reaction with it is computed more times. If task have a subset of "good" ligands for current target, duration of its computation may be long and process should progress unevenly.

Thanks for explaining the why as well as the what.

Just aborted 62895949 after nearly 12h CPU runtime and showing 45% progress.
WU's come in showing a runtime of 5.5h. I would like to see the expected runtime somewhat more accurate if WU's run normal.
There seems to be quite a big spread in runtimes. Other projects are more predictable.

The expected run time appears to be the average of your last ‘n’ work units rather than tailored to the individual WU and, as you say, there is a big spread in the size of then with most around 5 hours but some, as in the one you aborted, running for 24 hours. The credits given do reflect the run time so, if that worries you, you don’t loose out.

A lot of the results that were accumulated on my computers during offline period of the project are invalid (those machines usually do not generate any invalid results at all). Do you see any possibility to rescue these work units or the invested run time?

Same here, almost 800 units uploaded yesterday declared invalid and increasing.

Strange, all of my WUs that uploaded after the upgrade have validated clean

Dear all,

On February 14th, for about 08:00-20:00 UTC, the project server will be shut down for maintenance. We will upgrade hard drives to support larger loads.

All the best,
Team SiDock@home

Thanks for the heads up
31) Questions and Answers : Windows : CPU utilization in Windows11 machine (Message 1469)
Posted 22 Jan 2022 by Bryn Mawr
Post:
Windows machine can not give more than 3-4% CPU utilization.
CPU settings is 75% of the CPU with 100% CPU time.
What can be possibly causing this?

What memory do you have and what are the memory settings in Boinc?

What are the suspend settings?

What tasks are running?

The server is slow but does get there eventually - keep the faith :-)
33) Message boards : Number crunching : Pending credit with me and a wingman (Message 1457)
Posted 15 Jan 2022 by Bryn Mawr
Post:
Tasks have been completed ok.
Wingman has also completed the task ok.
Most projects validate the results and give credit.
Not here.
I see that the tasks have these factors:

minimum quorum 2
initial replication 2
max # of error/total/success tasks 8, 8, 8

Well if it's a quorum of 2, then why hasn't the server validated the 20 tasks I have spit out so far and that the wingman has also completed?

The project has server problems and it tends to get overloaded. There are currently over 14,000 tasks waiting for validation (70 of them mine 🙂).

The work flows slowly but it does flow and you get the credits after a while.

I created a SIDock@home account about 2 months ago and have not received one unit of work yet. I get plenty of work from my other projects.

In the event log options turn on work fetch reporting and do an update for sidock. Report back with the event log entries that are generated.

It would also help to know which version of Boinc and which os you’re running :-)

37) Message boards : Number crunching : Point Drop per Work Unit. (Message 1127)
Posted 2 Sep 2021 by Bryn Mawr
Post:
Recently I have been getting between 10 and 16 points per WU, with run times from 1000 to 1500 seconds.
Today I noticed that a number (at least 5) have been granted from 1 to 4 points for similar run times.

Any idea why? or are we using Credit New so it gives what it wants no matter what?

Thanks
Conan

I’ve also seen a points drop but there’s also been a corresponding drop in time taken - I see nothing as low as your points, my lowest has been only just sub 10.
38) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : No new Workunits for MacOS? (Message 1121)
Posted 31 Aug 2021 by Bryn Mawr
Post:
Hello,

on my mac pro, I don't get any new workunits since weeks.
Is there a mis-configuration of my BOINC, or are there actually no workunits?

Greetings,
Lasse

According to the server status page all outstanding WUs are Checkpoint and Progress Bar and according to the applications page that app does not run on macOS so no, no workunits available.
39) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : GLIBC_2.27 Req (Message 1111)
Posted 17 Aug 2021 by Bryn Mawr
Post:
As I wanted to run all applications I could, I decided to take the upgrade path rather than any hacks.
This seemed a good idea at the time, so I went ahead with it.

I started with Fedora 23 which has GLIBC 2.22
Went to Fedora 25 which has GLIBC 2.24, this seemed to go OK.
So jumped with confidence to Fedora 27 which has GLIBC 2.26, again seemed to go OK
Confidence still high started Fedora 29 download (Fedora 28 has GLIBC 2.27) with GLIBC 2.28
All seemed OK with download and install of updates till the reboot, would not get past first boot up screen.
OH NO I though what have I done?

Long story shortened, 18 hours later I found a way via editing the BOOT menu to get the GUI back and then Fedora
tells me "Congratulations Fedora 29 update complete",,, What.
Anyway I am too scared to reboot again Linux Fedora 29 is running with GLIBC 2.28 and I can launch BOINC, CurieMarieDock work units have been running fine.

I still can't get the BOINC Manager to work, all files appear to be there, but nothing happens when I launch it, so I can't see what is running unless I check Task Manager.

(I launched BOINC directly from the BOINC folder using boinc executable, the boincmgr executable is the one not launching.
So 2 days to get back up and running (mostly), but it has been a learning experience,

I should do single version upgrades of the OS not multiples, less time and less things to go wrong.

Backup your data, I didn't but was lucky as it all stayed there and I didn't lose anything.

Don't leave it so long to upgrade (I will still probably leave it as I don't plan on upgrading every 6 months, if it works don't touch it)

Make sure you have a lot of hot Tea (or Coffee if you prefer), food or snacks available as it will take a long time to do multiple updates.

Onward with the fun of computing (I will laugh about this sometime in the future I am sure).

Have a look in your home directory for a file called Boinc-Manager-xxxx or similar, it should be 5 bytes long.

If you find it then delete it, it’s a lock file to say that BM is running but it sometimes gets left behind when it closes.
