SLAVA UKRAINE
Make love not war.
I've been crunching for Seti@home since the year 2000, when my High School electronics teacher, Dave Huber, introduced me to it. I ran it on my Pentium 3 laptop, a bunch of P2s, P1 even a 486!! That thing that was swapping pretty bad with only 16 MB RAM Windows 95.. Had them running on my card table in my room. His interest in Distributed Computing stuck with me.
*Special thanks to Nicholas (Nick) Macias of Clark College, Vancouver Wa who encouraged my pursuits of making a difference in Distributed Computing.
Always seemed like computers should be fully utilized to better humanity.. unless they are way too old.
Proof by work cryptocurrency is a huge waste of computing resources, but we'll move on eventually.
I've been running Seti@home and then when that project hibernated, i switched to Rosetta and Einstein. NOVEMBER 2021 on, i have halted Einstein@Home work for the reason that analyzing radio telescope data is backburner. Biological scientific research takes priority. Now configured 50/50 Rosetta@Home and World Community Grid. Early 2022 on : I have 3 projects attached on all machines, Rosetta, World Community Grid and SiDock. The 1st 2 have been dead or very low compute. Sidock stays busy.
Disappointed in the huge reduction of computing capacity of these projects (Rosetta/Folding) after Covid peak.
Finally getting serious and wanting to heat my house with "scientific research".
I really dig the Optiplex SFF, very compact and professional.
Bought a ton of them used off eBay for cheap.
AC is on constantly on summer days but I stay comfortable. and will keep them going 24/7. The ones in the garage obviously do not get air conditioned air but I did recently (August 2022) add an industrial air 20" fan Utilitech brand to bathe them in ambient air.
Edit Nov 2023: I undervolt the Skylake and coffee lake boxes by usually 140 millivolts to reduce CPU package power consumption from ~65 to 45 watts! So 60w at the wall for i5-8500 with SSD. Via Throttlestop software and adding 2 task scheduler.
Some of them can only handle 120 or 100mV undervolt.
Hey Linus (Tech Tips), wassup?
Professionally, i have an A.S, of Electronics, but never really utilized. Don't want to be a technician. I drive for Uber Eats and Grubhub. 2022 I want to be consistently successful in the stock market. Keep my eye on the ball.
